Pupil Premium

The pupil premium is funding provided to schools to:

  • improve the achievement of pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds so they can fulfil their potential;
  • offer additional support for children from service families;
  • provide for children who are in the care of a local authority, as outlined in the Children Act 1989.

Our School Approach

At Yalding St Peter and St Paul Primary School, we are dedicated to creating a supportive and ambitious learning environment where every child is encouraged to succeed. We aim to nurture both academic progress and personal development, ensuring pupils are well-prepared for the next stage of their education.

To support this, we use a range of carefully planned strategies designed to stretch pupils while also addressing any barriers to learning. We are committed to ensuring that all pupils eligible for the pupil premium, regardless of their starting points, are supported to make strong and sustained progress.

When deciding how to allocate pupil premium funding, we make informed choices based on educational research. In particular, we refer to the Education Endowment Foundation and its Teaching and Learning Toolkit, which evaluates the impact and cost-effectiveness of different approaches.

Our provision includes:

  • consistently high-quality teaching across all classes
  • effective and targeted use of teaching assistants
  • mastery approaches to deepen understanding
  • one-to-one support where appropriate
  • interventions to develop pupils’ speaking and listening skills
  • encouraging strong partnerships with parents and carers
  • focused support for reading comprehension
  • small group teaching sessions
  • programmes that promote social and emotional wellbeing

Assessment and monitoring

On entry to the school, pupils are assessed to identify any early language or learning needs. This enables staff to put in place appropriate support and interventions from the outset, particularly in the early years.

We maintain a strong focus on tracking pupil progress and evaluating the impact of our provision. This includes the use of assessment data and regular pupil progress meetings involving both teaching and support staff.

Pupils who are not making expected progress are identified quickly and provided with additional support. Disadvantaged pupils are discussed at every progress meeting, including those who are currently meeting expectations, to ensure they continue to achieve well.

We regularly review our pupil premium provision to ensure it is effective and continues to meet the needs of all eligible pupils, including those who are higher attaining.

We recognise the importance of working closely with families. School staff engage with parents and carers to help overcome potential challenges outside of school and to support children’s learning and aspirations.

More detailed information about how the pupil premium funding is used can be found in the school’s published strategy document below.
